Thoughts

There's always some cause for concern with modern technology. After all, you've likely seen the way things can be in Black Mirror, or the AI uprising of Skynet in Terminator. So, what happens when your date night is hijacked by mysterious pictures and messages airdropped to your phone?

That's the question mystery/thriller Drop chooses to ask. This fast-paced whodunit sees widower Violet (Meghann Fahy) bombarded with messages and memes on her date, threatening to kill her family if she doesn't cooperate.

Much like director Christopher Landon's other horror titles, Happy Death Day and Freaky. His latest, Drop, shares a very similar vibe to those movies, with thrills and the odd laughs along the way. Despite the brief runtime, there's always something cranking up the tension to keep you invested. Whether that be multiple suspects drawing your attention, or the ticking clock on Violet's lethal date, which'll cause you to constantly monitor the enclosed space and assess the supporting cast for clues. Although the ending wraps up the mystery cleanly enough, the reveal and climax don't quite match up to the intrigue and suspense the film builds up so well.

In a Nutshell

There's enough happening in Drop to keep you hooked on its fun premise. It never goes above and beyond what it needs, resulting in a satisfying watch, rather than a must.
